Temporary research position in Stellar Astrophysics (Asteroseismology) at
the Royal Observatory of Belgium

Institute: Royal Observatory of Belgium
Ringlaan 3, B-1180 Brussels, BELGIUM
Tel: +32-2-373.02.11
Fax: +32-2-374.98.22

Department: Astrometry and Dynamics of Celestial Bodies
Head of Department: Dr. P. Lampens

The Royal Observatory of Belgium (ROB) invites applications for a position
of scientific researcher on a temporary basis of about 2 years. The successful
candidate is expected to work in the field of Asteroseismology on a project funded by
the Federal Ministry of Science Policy. In this project, we propose to study the
interaction(s) between pulsation, chemical composition, and multiplicity in
a large sample of poorly investigated main-sequence A- and F-type stars. The results
will be based on both high-resolution spectroscopic and photometric data. The
objectives are: (1) to improve the understanding of the occurrence of pulsation in the lower
classical instability strip in terms of chemical composition, (2) to provide new
insight(s) on the link between tidal interaction and chemical composition,
and (3) to study the effects of tides on the pulsations of selected binaries.

For this position, we are looking for a young researcher with a PhD in
Sciences and a specialized education in Astrophysics. Previous experience in the data
reduction and analysis of spectroscopic/photometric observations of stellar objects is
required. The motivated applicant should send his/her curriculum vitae, a
list of publications and a letter of research interests. The contract will start as
soon as possible, preferably within 2 months after the selection. The contract's
duration will depend on the applicant's past experience in research (21-24 months).
English, French and/or Dutch are possible languages of communication.

Applications and/or questions should be sent before 2007, July 1st, at the
latest, to:
